What we do

Research and development across bioprocess, biomedical engineering, food science, and molecular biology — for animal cells cultivated within bioreactors, and for non-animal sources including plants, fungi, algae, and bacteria.

01

Cell culture media formulation

Custom media development and characterization, and reformulation to bring cost per liter down. Serum-free throughout.

02

Cell line development

Isolation, characterization, adaptation, and banking. More than 150 lines established in house since 2018, including serum-free and suspension adaptation of adherent lines.

03

Bioprocess development and scale-up

Process development from bench scale to 2,000 L working volume, including suspension, perfusion, and fed-batch culture, harvest, and downstream processing.

04

Ingredient development

Development and characterization of prepared food ingredients and bioactive ingredients derived from cultivated cells, with in-house analytical support.

05

Contract manufacturing

Production in our FDA-inspected, GMP-compliant food facility in San Francisco — the suite that makes our own product.

In May 2025, FDA completed its premarket consultation on Wildtype’s cell-cultivated salmon and issued a “no questions” letter. The product went on sale in a restaurant the following month — the first cultivated seafood sold in the United States.
